Reclaiming an unused rooftop through food, participation, and lightweight urban landscape design.
Transformation of an underutilized school rooftop in the dense urban fabric of central Athens into a multifunctional edible landscape and outdoor learning environment.
The intervention introduced a modular ecosystem of lightweight wooden planters, Mediterranean edible and aromatic planting, small fruit trees, custom seating elements, and handcrafted outdoor furniture designed specifically for rooftop conditions and everyday student use. The spatial composition was developed to operate simultaneously as a productive garden, a social gathering space, and an open-air educational environment.
Built through a hands-on participatory process, students and educators actively contributed to the assembly, planting, and stewardship of the space, turning the project itself into a collective learning experience around urban ecology, food systems, biodiversity, and collaborative care.
Special attention was given to low-weight construction methods, modularity, climate resilience, and material simplicity, allowing the rooftop to evolve into a calm and functional landscape within an otherwise highly mineral urban environment.
The project reflects Trofy.Lab’s broader approach towards productive urban landscapes: combining ecological design, urban agriculture, lightweight construction, and community activation into living spaces that reconnect everyday urban life with nature and food production.
